About This Book

This book covers the practical tasks of the Assistant Programmer skill test, organised into seven units that follow the notified syllabus. Every task is presented the same way: the wording the question is likely to take, the software you need, the method step by step, complete working code or commands, an explanation of what earns marks, and the mistakes that lose them.

The code in this book has been written to be typed, not copied. Type it once by hand and you will remember it; paste it and you will not. Where a task can be answered in more than one language, both versions are given, so you can answer whichever the paper names.

Unit 6 lists free online tools for every kind of practice in this book. None of them requires payment. Unit 7 sets out a thirty-day plan and the method to follow on the day of the test itself.

One caution throughout: test-centre machines usually have no internet connection and no reference material. Use the online tools to build speed at home, then practise the same task offline at least once before the exam.

Name

Description

Objective type on OMR. General English, General Tamil, General Knowledge with reasoning and aptitude, and Computer Knowledge, which carries the largest weightage.

Stage 2

Skill Test

Conducted on a computer. Marked out of 50 with a minimum qualifying mark of 18. This book covers this stage.

Stage 3

Viva Voce

Candidates qualifying in the skill test are called in a ratio of about 1:2 or 1:3 against the vacancies.

The pattern, marks and qualifying standard described above follow the recruitment notifications issued by the Judicial Recruitment Cell, High Court of Madras. Examination patterns change. Always verify the current position against the official notification for your recruitment year before relying on any figure in this book.

How Each Task Is Presented

  • Task question — the wording in which the task is likely to be set.
  • Requirements — the software, access and hardware you need to attempt it.
  • Method — the steps, in the order you should perform them.
  • Code and commands — complete and working, not fragments.
  • Explanation — what the code does and why it is written that way.
  • Marking points, notes and common mistakes — what earns marks and what loses them.
